University of Akron 30" Water Main Replacement Project

Replacing Critical
Infrastructure

Two water mains run east to west through the center of campus at the University of Akron. Both water mains are over a hundred years old, and one of them has a history of breaks and leaks that are unable to be remedied through typical maintenance.

The City of Akron will use Akron Rescue Plan funds to transfer all water services from campus buildings and reroute them to the existing functional water main nearby. Other work includes rehabilitating the functional water main by installing two new valves. These valves are installed so that the water main may be turned in and out of service easily for future repairs and eventual replacement.

This emergency work will create better water quality and pressure for the university and downtown area and mitigate the potential for more serious breakages. Akron continues to coordinate with customers to ensure that water infrastructure is rehabilitated and replaced to prioritize the health and safety of residents.
